The digital transformation that is happening in dentistry is driving improvements in workplace safety and health, states an April 25, 2025, press release from Dentsply Sirona in which the company affirms its commitment to playing its part by advancing digital solutions that empower oral health professionals to deliver more efficient care. According to the press release, data from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reveals that the number of reported incidents of occupational injuries and illnesses in dental practices has been declining. The reduction in safety incidents can largely be attributed to increased risk awareness and enhanced infection control protocols resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic; however, the ongoing digital transformation of workflows and processes also appear to be contributing factors.
Because dentists spend prolonged periods of time in awkward positions making repetitive movements, they often suffer from back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other musculoskeletal disorders. However, research has shown that digitally connected treatment centers that adapt to dentists’ requirements and integrate various solutions can reduce strain and improve ergonomics. Although new technologies, automated workflows, and AI-enhanced workflows have made tasks faster and more efficient, contributing to the reduction in safety incidents, a large amount of physical work remains central to a dentist’s job.
On April 28, 2025, which is World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the International Labour Organization will release a comprehensive report on how digital transformation can further enhance workplace safety and health. The report is expected to highlight responses from government agencies, employers, workers, and other stakeholders regarding approaches to mitigating potential safety and health risks.
According to Dentsply Sirona, the company remains committed to developing innovative solutions that solve unmet needs for its customers—with a primary focus on advancing digital solutions that continue to bring new capabilities to its customers and empower them to deliver more efficient patient care. “Digital advancements have given rise to a new generation of products, including latest generation X-RAY systems such as Dentsply Sirona’s Heliodent Plus generator with intraoral sensors, which reduce radiation exposure when compared to the use of phosphor plates,” says Nadia Amor, head of imaging solutions at Dentsply Sirona.
“We pride ourselves on being at the forefront of digital transformation,” says Rainer Seemann, vice president and chief clinical officer at Dentsply Sirona. “Our commitment to enhancing patient care, streamlining workflows, and improving safety for dental professionals worldwide is strengthened by the highlighted impact of digital transformation in driving a safer and healthier environment in dental practices.”
The press release notes that data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) demonstrates that additional factors have contributed to improving the safety and well-being of dental professionals, including the adoption of advanced personal protective equipment and the incorporation of stricter hygiene practices. Therefore, it is important that dental professionals focus on these measures to further reduce the likelihood of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and chemicals.
