Originally introduced in the European Union in 1995, AH Plus® has become one of the most extensively studied endodontic sealers globally, with reported use in more than 800 million root canal procedures. To mark its 30th anniversary, Dentsply Sirona has published an updated scientific manual featuring selected peer-reviewed clinical studies that examine the material’s performance and long-term clinical outcomes.
According to the manufacturer, AH Plus® has maintained a reputation for reliability as an endodontic sealer over the past three decades and continues to be widely cited in scientific literature. The material’s development was led by Prof. Joachim E. Klee during his time with the Dentsply Sirona’s R&D team. Describing its formulation, Klee stated: “The material is based on linear epoxy-amine addition polymers; these ensure a certain degree of flexibility. In addition, it has high adhesion to dentin and gutta-percha, extremely low solubility, and outstanding dimensional stability. This enables long-term, reliable sealing.”
Endodontic sealers play a key role in the final stage of root canal treatment—obturation—where they help to ensure a permanent seal of the root canal system and prevent reinfection. The newly released manual includes clinical data from studies published between 2007 and 2024, encompassing 3,407 patients and 3,735 teeth. These studies examined a range of treatment approaches and obturation techniques. Findings suggest consistently high treatment success rates, including when using single-cone obturation or in cases involving secondary treatments.
Beth Ann Damas, DDS, MS, of Orland Park, Illinois, reflected on her long-term use of the product: “AH Plus sealer is my go-to and has been since residency. It is consistent and reliable. I have had a lot of success with this product. I can recommend AH Plus to my colleagues: time-tested, proven by research, consistent, and reliable.”
Commenting on the broader context of the anniversary publication, Arjan de Roy, Group Vice President Essential Dental Solutions at Dentsply Sirona, noted: “We know that dentists want to have a sealer that delivers reliability and durability over the long term. We are convinced that our updated, comprehensive scientific manual will help boost trust in AH Plus and give dentists the confidence they need to deliver successful endodontic treatments.”
