Daniel Alter, MSc, MDT, CDT, has launched a business book and companion online toolkit developed for dental laboratory owners, managers, technicians moving into leadership roles, entrepreneurs starting laboratories, and those setting up and operating in-office laboratories.
The book, The Optimized Dental Laboratory, contains 14 chapters combining cited dental industry data with the continuing story of a laboratory undergoing a business transformation. The material is intended to address the business aspects of operating a dental laboratory alongside its technical and craft considerations.
An accompanying toolkit provides 31 browser-based tools designed to allow readers to apply concepts addressed in the book. The tools require no additional software, account, or membership portal. According to information provided with the launch, the toolkit will be updated with additional tools and revisions to existing resources, and purchasers will also receive an accompanying newsletter.
Alter is principal consultant at Dental Technology Consulting, LLC, and a professor of restorative dentistry at New York City College of Technology (CUNY). He is also executive editor of Inside Dental Technology and a curriculum consultant to the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation.
His dental technology career spans 30 years and includes more than a decade owning and operating a midsized dental laboratory from startup through its sale. His consulting experience has included individual technician startups and dental manufacturers. Alter has published more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and was named Educator of the Year by the National Association of Dental Laboratories.
In addition to the self-guided resources, Alter is offering a limited number of consulting and advisory engagements for laboratories addressing specific business transitions, scaling decisions, or exits. Engagements may take the form of a standing advisory board position or consulting focused on an individual laboratory's needs.
The book and toolkit are business resources rather than dental laboratory manufacturing services, and Alter does not accept restorative cases through the program.
